The establishment of Hillsboro
Two prospectors, Dave Stitzel and Daniel Dugan, discovered gold on the east side of the Black Range Mountains along Percha Creek in April 1877. The discovery led to a rapid influx of miners, store owners, and many others, creating a tent city that grew quickly. Hillsboro became the county seat of Sierra County in 1884 and remained so until 1936, when Hot Springs (now Truth or Consequences) took that position. The town’s post office opened in 1879 and has been operating ever since.
